HHC, also known as Hexahydrocannabinol, is a cannabinoid that has recently entered the market and is similar to CBD or Delta-8. Because HHC is so new to many, there is a lot of disinformation circulating about the legality, safety, and effects of this distant cousin of THC. This article will explore what is HHC, its effects, and legal status.
What Is HHC?
Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) is a cannabinoid that can be found in small doses in in the pollen from cannabis sativa L (hemp) flowers, and its seeds.
However, HHC products that can be found on the market at the moment are semi-synthetic. What does that mean?? It means HHC is made in a laboratory with natural cannabinoid extracts from cannabis plants.
HHC has started to gain popularity only recently, but the process to sythetize it isn’t new. It was discovered by Roger Adams in 1944, when he added hydrogen molecules to a regular THC molecule.
How Is HHC Made?
Most HHC manufacturers use the hydrogenation process Roger Adams discovered. The process consists in mixing cannabis extracts rich in cannabinoids with hydrogen gas in a pressurised recipient.
To increase the potency and accelerate the hydrogenation process, HHC manufacturers use catalysers that makes the reaction between cannabinoids and hydrogen gas much faster.
What Are The Effects of HCC?
HHC has only recently entered the market and a full understanding of its effects is still to be determined. Many manufacturers of HHC advocate that this cannabinoid impacts our CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are part of our endocannabinoid system. As HHC flows through these receptors it produces effects similar to the ones of THC.
- Increased appetite
- Amplified senses
What Are The Benefits Of HHC?
There is still much research to be done to fully understand this cannabinoid and its benefits, but some studies suggest that hexahydrocannabinol has similar benefits as THC or Delta-8.
Is HHC Legal?
Can you buy HHC legally? Yes.
HHC has been developed as a legal alternative to THC, much like CBD or Delta-8 THC. HHC is obtained from delta-8THC which can be found in high concentration in hemp plants and contains 0% THC, therefore making it completely legal.
The European union doesn’t have any laws that regulate the use of hemp plants for all the member states. Some countries, like Spain, allow hemp based products to be sold as long as they contain less than 0.2% THC, this is why HHC is legal in Spain.
